How this chart is made

Each line is a walk up Theographic’s father links, one from Mary and one from Joseph. Each step goes to the person Theographic records as the father, and the walk stops when it reaches Adam. Jesus is added at the end of both lines.

The two lines

The line through Mary has 76 people. Counting Adam as the first generation, as every person page does, Mary is the 75th generation and Jesus the 76th, so Jesus is 75 generations after Adam. It follows Luke 3:23–38, which runs from Heli back to Adam by way of David’s son Nathan. Luke 3:23 calls Heli the father of Joseph; Theographic records Heli as Mary’s father, which follows one traditional reading of Luke. Many readers take both lists as Joseph’s. Begat shows Theographic’s relations as they are recorded and takes no side.

The line through Joseph has 65 people and runs through David’s son Solomon and the kings of Judah; on it Jesus is 64 generations after Adam. The two lines are the same for the first 34 generations, Adam to David, so the chart draws that trunk once and splits after David.

Matthew’s fourteens

Matthew 1:17 counts 42 generations from Abraham to Jesus, in three sets of fourteen. The walk through Joseph follows Theographic’s relations, which come from the lists in Kings and Chronicles, so it names people that Matthew 1:2–16 leaves out: Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah, Jehoiakim, and Pedaiah. At Zerubbabel the walk goes through Pedaiah (1 Chronicles 3:19), where Matthew 1:12 names Shealtiel as Zerubbabel’s father.

To find them, each person on the walk from Abraham to Joseph’s father was checked against the people Theographic tags in Matthew 1:2–16, and anyone not tagged there was looked for by name in the Berean Standard Bible text of those verses. On the chart a hollow ring marks each person Matthew leaves out.

Matthew also names Judah, but Theographic does not tag him in those verses, so he is not counted as left out.

Mary, Joseph, and Jesus

Jesus has his own entry on Begat, with the divine entries, and no line of descent is drawn into a divine entry. The chart joins Mary and Joseph to Jesus with dashed lines labelled “mother” and “husband of Mary”, as Matthew 1:16 describes Joseph. The family trees follow the same rule.

Years

The 4,003 years run from Adam’s birth in 4003 BC to AD 1. There is no year 0, so the count is 4,003. Years are traditional (Jones) years from Theographic, shown as recorded, not as settled fact. A person with no year in the data has none on the chart.
